Community Activities For Seniors

from: Kyle Besser

If you are a senior citizen, you can still lead a full and active life. You may not be fully aware of all the different things there are to do and all the different responsibilities available for seniors who wish to remain active in their communities.

Community activities are a great way to relieve boredom, join in social activity, challenge the mind and stay physically active. What kinds of activities are there for seniors to participate in?

When it comes to activities for seniors at senior communities, the events are usually posted on a community bulletin board and/or flyers are sent out to all residents. Some examples of community activities for seniors are:

* Monthly birthday parties to which all residents are invited. Families and friends may be invited to participate. There may be birthday parties, wedding celebrations and baby showers for the family members of residents of a community as well.

* Holiday celebrations for the various holidays. Holidays can be particularly difficult times for those away from their own homes, families and friends. Valentine's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, and Easter are a few examples of holidays that many seniors find difficult. Holiday celebrations can help seniors deal with depression and sadness during these holidays and boredom from having to spend these holidays away from friends and family.

* Games are great for one-to-one relationships and group activity. Bingo is a favorite for many seniors. Bridge, chess and other games for small groups are usually available also.

* Outdoor activities including gardening, cookouts, nature walks or just enjoying time in the sun alone or with a friend provide senior exercise and help with senior fitness.

* Trips and tours to community events can be both fun and educational. Planned trips and tours allows seniors to attend events they might not be able to do on their own.

* Exercise fun and physical senior health fitness activities. Community leaders often recruit volunteers to lead yoga or other exercise sessions aimed at the capabilities of seniors. Even wheelchair-bound seniors can participate in many of these activities.

* Arts and crafts programs frequently are offered by the activities coordinator for seniors.

* Seniors might also participate in various religious activities depending on the religion. Church activities are great for seniors to meet and belong to groups of seniors with similar interests.

Community activities are very important to seniors. Most find it both fun and healthy to have people around them and to have activities planned in their schedule to look forward to. Community activities give them people to see and talk to and something useful to do.
