Types Of Senior Housing

from: Kyle Besser

Because of health issues many seniors often face, finding suitable senior housing can be a problem. Many seniors are faced with the difficult task of leaving their home of many years because of immobility issues and the need for senior care housing. This is especially true if they have go up and down stairs to access bedrooms, bathrooms or the kitchen.

If a senior living at home decides to continue living in the same home, it may become necessary to renovate the home to make it more suitable. This may mean senior housing remodeling, such as the installation of an elevator or stair lifts or deciding to live only on the ground floor and avoid the stairs. Renovating a home and senior housing remodeling is not always possible or the cost of senior housing remodeling may be too high.

Seniors can decide to move into a senior housing community, a senior housing apartment, or one of the many other different types of senior housing options. These different types of senior housing options make it easier for seniors to live independently and keep safe, especially from falls. Many of the different types of senior housing facilities have 24 hour staff available in case of accidents or other emergencies.

Before making your decision, it is a good idea to explore the different types of senior housing options. The main different types of senior housing options are:

*Senior Apartments

Senior apartments are generally independent senior housing residences similar to regular apartments except only senior citizens live there.

*Independent Living Facilities

Independent living facilities are similar to senior apartments. Each independent living community has a specific approach to the seniors living there. Some of the independent living communities were created simply to offer senior housing built for the needs of seniors. Some of the independent living communities offer a range of services that might include some nursing care on an as needed basis. Some senior citizen independent living communities will offer a complete range of senior services from an area strictly for independent living to senior care housing for those seniors who need continuous nursing care.

*Assisted Living Facilities

A trained staff helps residents in assisted living facilities who cannot fully take care of their own needs. In assisted living facilities, seniors retain much of their independence. They are able to come and go as they please, and many assisted living facility residents even keep their own transportation. Many assisted living facilities resemble apartments or even houses.

*Continuing Care Communities

Continuing care communities are a combination of the other types of senior housing accommodations on one property. Some senior housing units are for independent living, while other senior housing units are for assisted living.

*Retirement Communities

The need for appropriate senior housing is one of the reasons why retirement communities are so popular. Retirement communities provide seniors with living accommodations suitable for their needs. Many retirement communities are very comfortable places to live for seniors. There are some retirement communities where you can live in luxury. It all depends on what you want and how much you can afford.
