Renting Affordable Low-Income Housing

from: Kyle Besser

Many senior citizens live on a fixed income. Low income senior housing is one way for struggling senior citizens to find affordable senior citizen housing. If you are planning to rent a low income federal subsidized senior citizen housing apartment, there are some things you should understand about federal subsidized senior housing rentals.

The first thing to understand is how the rent amount is figured on low income government subsidized senior citizen housing. The amount for rent is based on your total yearly income. Every year, you will be required to show a W-2, social security statement, tax refunds, gifts of money and your children's income if it applies.

This total is added together and analyzed using a special equation to determine your monthly subsidized senior housing rent. If you meet the income guidelines, you will be assigned a monthly rent that you need to pay every month on the required day. If you fail to pay, you can be subject to eviction.

With government subsidized senior citizen housing, your rent may be reduced or it may be raised depending on the income guidelines. If your income does not fit into the qualifying range, you may have to move. It is possible to make too much money to live in low income federal subsidized senior citizen housing.

Your income and rent are set for you and your family. If you allow someone else to move into the government subsidized senior citizen housing with you, you could face immediate eviction, or you may have to include that other person's income in with your income. You risk not meeting the guidelines for low income federal subsidized senior housing or the number of people allowed in the senior citizen low income housing rental.

Low income government subsidized senior citizen housing does help seniors who are struggling, but if you break the senior citizen low income housing rental agreement, you can face eviction. If you are evicted from low income government subsidized senior citizen housing, it may be hard for you to find other affordable senior housing.

You need to reveal all money received during the prior year. You should not try to hide anything. Even your tax return is considered income and will be included for analyzing your income. You need to be careful when reporting your income, and keep all your documents. Many people forget about gift money when claiming income.

If you do not report some of your income and are found out, you could face a new review process that could raise your federal subsidized senior citizen housing rent and require you to pay back rent that was due. You could be evicted for failure to comply with the rules that are mandated for the low income federal subsidized senior citizen housing.

When you apply for low income government subsidized senior housing, be careful when filling out the application. Remember, the income you claim is for the prior year, not for the present year. Report all money that needs to be claimed, and you should have no problems. Claim your income, gifts, tax returns, child support, alimony and your children's income. These are all considered when calculating your yearly income and used to determine your monthly government subsidized senior citizen housing rent.
