To help you fully understand your options as far as senior housing is concerned, it's best to become familiar with some of the commonly used senior housing terms.
Accessory Apartment
An accessory apartment is a separate living unit usually designed inside a single-family home. Sometimes these are referred to as granny suites. These types of living units are a popular option for seniors who would like to live in their own home with a certain amount of privacy while having the convenience of a caregiver nearby.
Accreditation
Accreditation is the status a provider receives after meeting very specific requirements set out by an accreditation body. Accreditation bodies in the senior housing and care industry include:
1 Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC)
2 Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)
3 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
ADL
ADL is an acronym that stands for "Activities of Daily Living," refering to everyday activities like bathing, eating, getting dressed, personal grooming, and using the toilet.
Aging In Place
Aging in place is a term used to describe the concept of a senior remaining in his or her current living environment even if there is a physical or mental decline.
ECHO
ECHO is an acronym for "Elder Cottage Housing Opportunities." This term refers to a small temporary home that's installed on the same site as a single-family residence. They are usually build on the residence site of an adult child.
HIPAA
HIPAA is an acronym that stands for the "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act" that became a law on January 1, 1997. HIPAA states the requirements that any long-term care policy must follow so that premiums paid can be deducted as medical expenses instead of being considered taxable income.
Hospice Care
Hospice care involves special care and comfort provided to those who have a terminal illness. Hospice care also extends to their families and can include medical, counselling, and social services.
IADLS
IADLS is an acronym for "Instrumental Activities of Daily Living" which refers to day-to-day tasks like preparing meals, shopping, housekeeping, money management, and taking medication.
